KATHMANDU, Sept 21 (TNC) -- Pfizer Inc. is facing growing competition in a deal that will help its top-selling drug Viagra. The drugmaker is set to get U. S. approval for its use in treating erectile dysfunction in men, according to a news release.
"The drug has been approved in the U. for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men," said Joseph M. Plaquus, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive, and Pfizer's president of research and development. "We have an opportunity to make Viagra more widely used and for a better quality of life for millions of men around the world who suffer from this condition."
The drugmaker will receive FDA approval for Viagra, a generic version of Pfizer's drug Viagra. The drug is marketed as a drug to treat erectile dysfunction in men, the announcement says.
"The potential benefit for Viagra users is significant, and we are excited to get Viagra approval in the U. S., where it has the highest sales potential," said Dr. John H. Moffat, Pfizer's medical director. "This could bring a significant boost to Pfizer's efforts to create a new generation of medicines with the highest efficacy and safety."
Viagra is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, which includes male erectile dysfunction. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the U. S., Europe, Thailand, and Russia. It is also used off-label for the treatment of male breast cancer, a condition that affects approximately 1.4 million men worldwide.
Viagra is a form of a drug that works by dilating blood vessels in the penis. This allows blood to flow into the penis when sexually aroused. However, it does not work if there is sexual stimulation. Men who take Viagra do not experience erections until a certain point in their lives, the drug tells their sexual partner. However, if there is sexual stimulation, it can take up to 4 hours to work.
Viagra is the first drug approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. Other drugs for erectile dysfunction that treat this condition are Pfizer's blood pressure medication Cialis, Lilly's erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra, and Cialis's blood pressure medication Levitra. The drug is available through prescription and is the only drug in the world that is approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction.
VIDEOA Pfizer spokesperson said, "The Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra in November. Pfizer continues to work with our partners to ensure safety and efficacy of the medication and to support the safety and quality of this important treatment for patients worldwide."
The Pfizer-sponsored drugmaker is also facing growing competition from a generic rival, the United States-based Lilly Corporation, which is set to receive FDA approval in the U. in late next year. Lilly is based in Indianapolis and has been in business since 1987.
In its news release, Pfizer said the company is "reviewing potential drug applications to determine whether a new, generic version of Pfizer's Viagra is appropriate for use in the U. market."
The company said its generic Viagra is still in clinical testing. However, the drugmaker is looking to market the drug in other markets in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.
"We are focused on making available a new generation of medicines to treat erectile dysfunction in men, not only in a new drug application, but also in other new medicines as well," said Dr. Daniel Watts, Pfizer's president of research and development. "Our current patent exclusivity for Viagra will extend until April 30, 2024, and we continue to evaluate our options for marketing our drug."
Viagra is the drug company's fifth-best-selling medication and is the fifth-best-selling drug in the world. Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug Cialis is the company's fifth-best-selling medication and is the third best-selling drug in the world. Viagra's patent exclusivity ended in June 2023.
